The Voice Season 30 Episode 8 Recap: Battle Part 2

Heading into the second night of battle voice In Season 30, Riley Green and Kelly Clarkson were waiting for Team Queen’s Kayleigh Mathews to make her decision on which team she would join.

Queen Latifah chose Kayleigh’s opponent as the winner of the fight on October 12, but Riley and Kelly both went for Steal. Hoping to capitalize on Riley’s “great catalog of traditional country songs,” Kayleigh decided to join Team Riley at the top of Tuesday night’s episode.

In the Battle Rounds, each team will perform six one-on-one duets, and coaches will select one winner to advance to the all-new Cut Week round. There are four stills on the table, giving each coach a single opportunity to save an artist who was eliminated from one team and bring them back to their team. Serving as guest advisors throughout the rounds are Carly Pearce from Team Riley, Ariana DeBose from Team Kelly, Patti LaBelle from Team Queen, and Alex Warren from Team Adam.

team queen
sing: “Tennessee Whiskey”
Patty’s Advice: Patti calls Luke in rehearsal saying he’s “a little scared,” urging him to use whatever powers he can tell he has. After some more practice, Patti was satisfied enough with the product that she threw in a highlighter to convey that they were attacking the song to her taste.
Coaches’ Comments: Riley found what Luke did in the song to be unique, but Adam preferred BigCountry because he felt “other elements”, such as his big personality, would work better for the show. Queen said they “sound amazing together”, highlighting Luke’s ability to overcome the emotions present during rehearsals and BigCountry’s dedication to the performance.
result: Big Country Victory

Anna McElroy vs. Johnny Capua

Ariana’s Advice: Ariana has “no notes” other than to suggest that riffs are only what comes naturally because “less is always more.”
Coaches’ Comments: Adam and Riley thought Anna performed better in this battle, and all the coaches noted that Johnnie’s nerves play a major role in his role. Kelly said they both made her want to get on stage and perform with them, noting Johnnie’s “special timbre” and Anna’s raspy voice, which was “very attractive”.
result: Anna McElroy wins

‘The Voice’ Season 30: Hazel Gerson and Nina Howland Griffin Nagle/NBC

team Kelly
sing: “Take a breath”
Ariana’s Advice: Ariana complimented Nina on her vibrato, but pinpointed her choice on the word “ouch” to see if there was anything else she could have done there.
Coaches’ Comments: Adam preferred Nina, but Riley was horrified that Hazel’s mom was looking down on him in the audience. Kelly called Hazel “more extroverted” and Nina “more introverted” in her way of performing. Stuck between the two, Kelly went with the artist she thought would fare better in the “duel” of life.

'The Voice' Season 30: Marcus Ladden Jr. and Chari
‘The Voice’ Season 30: Marcus Ladden Jr. and Chari Trey Patton/NBC

sing: “My own”
Patty’s Advice: Patty was impressed by being the first to pass on her own song, noting only that she was able to find “that one person” in the audience and deliver authentic vocals.
Coaches’ Comments: Both Kelly and Adam picked Chari as the winner, but gave Marcus credit for stepping up and executing at his level. Queen praised them both for taking the opportunity to make the song their own. She called Chari “special” over the song, which she thought was actually more comfortable for Marcus.
