The British actor has a few weeks left before filming begins. misty green, Chris Rock’s drama about show business and a sensitive, often self-destructive artist. So she flew to Los Angeles early and took a dip there, visiting local landmarks and walking down Hollywood Boulevard. Eleazar had previously spent limited time in LA working on publicity for the project. Now she wanted to take the time to dive deeper into the culture.

“Acting is three-dimensional anthropology.” Eleazar says, pouring himself a cup of peppermint tea. It’s late afternoon in midtown Manhattan a few days later. Misty It had its American premiere at the New York Film Festival, and she’s doing a press gig wearing a chic button-up shirt and jeans. “Just being in LA, there were a lot of little things here and there that you could find as you absorbed everything around you. Then one day, I was at the Equinox gym, trying to do as much as I could in her daily routine, and this woman came into gym class wearing high heels and sunglasses. It was like, ‘Great. That’s it.’ there She is.’

“Listen carefully. Don’t judge.” she added with a smile. (Eleazar laughs loudly and often.) “I’m not judging you as an actor, but it was an incredible moment where I said, ‘Yes, I see. Do you want to come to the gym wearing sunglasses and heels? Go!’ And that was Misty.”

Anyone who enjoys watching British TV and movies will no doubt have seen Eleazar. This often poignant character study gives her a real-life showcase where she can stretch out and go to some really dark places. Misty struggles with losing the apartment she lives in, an industry that ignores her, an old relationship (Adam Driver) who doubles as a dealer, a brother with mental health issues (Daniel Kaluuya), and a volatile legacy due to drug and alcohol abuse. Even though the filmmaker who once fired her (played by Rock himself) offers her a second chance, there’s no guarantee that a potential return means she’ll truly be back. Misty is talented. She is also a disaster.

“I got to see a lot of different Mistys,” Rock said in a post-screening discussion following the film’s NYFF screening, noting that he auditioned nearly 100 actors for the role. “Rosalind was my favorite Misty. The Misty I wanted to hang out with. The Misty I wanted to do a movie with for three months. She was the best actress, the smartest actress, had the most going on behind the eyes. She didn’t just say the lines, you could too. feel gravitation.”

Mention the audition process to Eleazar and she’ll tell you a worst-case scenario anecdote that led to another realization about Misty. “Yes, it was fine on the first read and I got a callback,” she says. “I also got a few fair notes from Chris about the character and how Misty drives her look. So I decided to really zhuzh myself, you know? I put on makeup, I did my hair.”

She also reserved studio space for a more professional environment than simply self-taping at home. But everything that could go wrong, from a heavy metal band practicing next door to Wi-Fi lag causing awkward delays, did go wrong. “What’s ironic is that they had me audition for a scene in the movie that involved a bad audition!,” she added. Eleazar wasn’t about to take any chances, so after the ordeal, he flew to Los Angeles on his own and asked to read with Rock in person. She booked the role shortly thereafter.

But seeing herself zhuzhez after that confusing reading, Eleazar says, helped her get to the heart of Misty. “At first, I thought the concept of ‘getting ahead with your looks’ was superficial,” she says. “Then I dug a little deeper and realized, ah! It’s not just a desire to want, it’s a desire to be recognized. It’s a desire to be recognized by others. Misty has been acting since she was 9 years old. She has no support system and can’t afford to be a victim. This is what she needs to survive. It was another moment where I thought, ‘Yes, I am.’ get ‘Her.'”

Eleazar quickly discovered that she grew up with a great support system – a single mother who worked in a shipping company. Her father, a Ghanaian politician, had little presence while she was growing up. Most of the time Rosalind lived in south London. But over the summer, she traveled with her mom to “Pakistan, Ghana, Tunisia… different places she worked. I loved it. She had friends from literally all over the world and I was exposed to all these different types of life early on. I honestly think that’s where my love of acting came from.”

Despite being an incredibly shy child, Eleazar said she took to performing immediately. “I felt more comfortable on stage than I did with a lot of people in a group situation.” After doing a lot of acting at school, Eleazar might have gone straight to drama school, she says. But she moved to Ghana in her early 20s and reconnected with her father. He passed away in 2010. “There was this detour, after my father passed away… I wanted to meet that side of my family that I had never met,” she says. “I really discovered that aspect of my life while my father was away. That was important to Rose.”

Eleazar fell in love with the countryside and might have stayed there permanently if her theater director friend hadn’t called. She asked Eleazar if he had any plans to continue acting. The two discussed it several times over the years. Ah, that ship has sailed. Rosalind answered. “But she knew that reverse psychology would be very effective for me,” says Eleazar. “’Oh, okay, don’t apply to drama school, just live in Ghana. Bye!’ I thought I would show her! I auditioned for LAMDA. [London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art]And then I came in. “I’ve been lucky ever since.”

Eleazar had been working steadily for almost a decade when casting agent Nina Gold caught her acting in Anton Chekhov’s film. Uncle Vanya In London’s West End. Louisa!'” she says, with the excited, wide-eyed look of a fan suddenly meeting the star of her favorite TV show. “To be honest, it’s a little weird when someone starts moving.” — Eleazar stabbed his finger in the air — “‘That’s. A. a famous man!’ It’s much better when someone goes and says, ‘I like your work.’ “I think it’s rewarding work.”

And while her performance has begun to garner Oscar buzz since the fall festival, which won’t come as a surprise to moviegoers, Eleazar admits she’s unsure about the additional attention it’s starting to bring her. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t really afraid of exposure.” She confesses. But she’s so happy about it misty green She’s getting the attention she feels she deserves, and she’s grateful that people have embraced her version of Angeleno, wrestling with her personal demons while trapped in the Hollywood machine, gym sunglasses and all.
