British national treasure Bill Nighy and veteran actress Rosemary DeWitt (“The Untamed,” “Smile 2”) have been revealed as new cast members for the second and final season of “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.”
The casting was revealed with some first photos at the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday, and it was also announced that the new season will premiere in March 2027.
Series star Holly Hunter was in attendance along with Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané, Robert Picardo and co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau.
In the new production, Nighy will play the role of Nyk Ake, Nahla’s estranged father. DeWitt plays Laytha Sadal, Tarima’s mother and Betazed’s first lady. Both actors are appearing as guest stars.
The second season tells the story of second-year cadets aboard the USS Athena. There, their ideals are put to the test as they navigate new rivalries, uneasy diplomatic negotiations, fierce school-wide tournaments, and the arrival of a mysterious new cadet whose presence affects everyone.
The new run follows a particularly poorly reviewed first season. This season and the fifth season of “Strange New Worlds” are expected to conclude the Kurtzman era on “Star Trek” before Skydance reboots the property with a new film.
