Insidious Ending Explained: Did Gemma defeat Cyrus? Is Ellis leaving the passage?

Directed by Jacob Chase, ‘Insidious: Out of the Furious’ is the sixth film in the iconic ‘Insidious’ franchise and takes place after the events of ‘Insidious: The Red Door’. While the world seems to be moving on from the horrors of creatures like the Lipstick-Face Demon, it appears another entirely new haunting is in the making in Pittsburgh. When Gemma West, a dental hygienist and single mother, begins having out-of-body experiences, it doesn’t take long for terrifying additional phenomena to appear. As pieces of her past begin to reclaim space in Gemma’s mind, she comes face to face with a terrifying demon who was once the cult leader and now plans to return to the real world and unleash terror like never before – until Ellis Rainier returns and saves the day.

Insidious Out of the Purder Plot Synopsis

‘Insidious Out of the Murder’ begins with a glimpse into the final days of Ingrid Hall, a single mother who seems to be haunted by nightmarish thoughts and voices. One day, her daughter Gemma approaches her mother hanging a knife, and soon after, Ingrid decides to take her own life in the bathroom. When Gemma tried to stop her, the door seemed to close on its own, leaving her alone for the next 20 years. As the story moves to the present, we learn that Gemma is also now a single mother and lives in the same apartment with her daughter Maya. But this ordinary life slowly begins to change when Gemma discovers three menacing-looking old men staring at her house.

Over the next few days, Gemma frequently finds herself in astral projection, with the same three people haunting her each time. To add to her embarrassment, she awoke with a single physical artifact from her dream-like experience. They all contain the same symbolism. Soon after, one of the older men approached her at work, but knocked her down and sent her further afield. There, Gemma encounters a creepy, demonic figure named Cyrus, but before he can do any harm, she is rescued by none other than Ellis Rainier, who leaves her a book with her address on it. After bringing the book to real life, Gemma arrives at the location and meets Alice’s assistant, Claire. Claire allows herself to be possessed so that her boss can speak through her.

Through Clare, Elise tells Gemma that she is an anomalous entity known as a courier, meaning a person who can bring items in and out of distant places. Cyrus was a notorious cult leader in the 70s who promised a revival of his followers. His plan is to use Gemma as a medium through which all Inhumans can descend on Earth, and Ellis believes the only way to stop him is to create a trap. The first step is to neutralize the three old men who are actually Cyrus’ living acolytes. Gemma then hatches an elaborate plan to lead the cult astray and reunite with her mother’s spirit in the process.

It is here that Gemma learns that Ingrid was originally meant to be a medium, but sacrificed her life. But more troubling than that is the fact that this ability is seemingly inherited, and Cyrus’ actual target throughout this entire period has been Maya, not Gemma. But by the time she realizes this, Cyrus seems to already be in control of Maya’s body. As Gemma races to protect her daughter, resurrected demons threaten to escape her home, forcing Gemma to do the unthinkable.

Insidious Ending: Did Gemma Defeat Cyrus? What happens in her house?

‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ ends with Gemma taking the entire house to Purder, once again trapping the hundreds of demons trying to invade the real world. She is chased by these entities throughout the film for her ability to deliver items from afar to the living world, but ultimately wins by reversing that ability. This decision is as physically difficult as it is psychologically difficult because it essentially means letting go of all the memories she made in this home, especially those of her mother. However, getting rid of those emotions is what makes her use this ability so powerfully, enough to defeat hundreds of supernatural beings at once.

There is a key moment before Gemma moves house, where Maya is seen holding the door handle and waiting for her mother. If Gemma had jumped right then, Maya would have been sent to the Furious as well and become prey to hundreds of malevolent beings. The reason this doesn’t happen is because it can only be explained as a leap of faith. Gemma, knowing her daughter is on the other side of the door, urges her to let go, not just physically but mentally as well. Her goal is for Maya to trust and truly understand her mother, which is what Gemma wishes she had done with her own mother. It’s no surprise that the scene switches between the child versions of Maya and Gemma. They both let go, so to speak, but for diametrically opposed reasons.

As the entire house erupts out of reality and into the Land of the Dead, the demons find themselves right where they started and are understandably furious. Cyrus promised them all ascension to a higher form, but they seem to be quite far from it. Conversely, their attempts to take over the real world as hostiles also fail, and they finally regard Cyrus as an imposter. As Gemma leaves Purder and reunites with her mortal self, we see Cyrus torn apart by members of his own cult. Through all of this, it seems like the house has now become a permanent fixture of the Murder, but that doesn’t really matter to Gemma and Maya, as their actual home is built through their love for each other and the connection that comes from that.

Why don’t Ellis and Ingrid go further afield?

From the moment it is revealed that Gemma can bring objects and beings back from Murder, the path is opened for Ellis Rainier and she can make her long-awaited return to the real world. She was killed in the first film and has appeared as a ghostly spirit in every ‘Insidious’ film since, but there is now an in-universe mechanism that justifies her return to human flesh. But the movie makes a conscious decision not to start down that path. Eventually, Ellis says goodbye to Gemma and she volunteers to stay further away. There may be practical reasons why the writers chose to keep Ellis as a soul, but there’s also a strong thematic core to her decision.

Ellis’s role as a psychic medium and savior remains largely unchanged across all of these films, but as she evolves into a supernatural being, she becomes much more powerful. In this film alone, we see her enter the body of one of the acolytes and trick Cyrus into defeating him. This shows how useful she can be as a supernatural asset. But just as important is her drive to save the people, spirits, and friendly beings trapped in Murder alongside the terrifying creatures. Elise’s journey to save innocent people is equally valuable on both sides of the veil, and since she has always been able to communicate with the real world through a medium, it makes perfect sense for her to remain in the gap.

Besides being the Furious’ lone protector, Elise has one more reason to be among the dead, and the same goes for Gemma’s mother, Ingrid. The idea of bringing someone back from the dead is precisely what the film critiques through characters like Cyrus, as it breaks down the barriers between these two worlds in an unnatural way. Beings brought into the real world appear to possess supernatural powers and malevolence, and there is no guarantee that this will not happen. Ingrid finds true closure in her final conversation with Gemma, who comes to truly understand the sacrifices her mother made for her. This not only maintains the internal logic of this franchise, but also allows for a more emotionally complex conclusion.

Is Cyrus dead? Description of the post-credits scene

After his own followers betray him, Cyrus is subjected to never-ending torture. Considering that entities technically cannot die in Murder, it’s likely that Cyrus will be torn apart until his thirst for demonic blood is satisfied. In this harrowing sequence, we’re reunited with some of the Insidious series’ classic antagonists, like the Old Woman or the Lipstick-Face Demon. It looks like they both made a bet to oust Cyrus. In some ways, this seems to be his karma for his sins when he was a cult leader who exploited the common people. While not all demons are necessarily the spiritual forms of murdered cult members, Cyrus is nonetheless responsible.

In the film’s post-credits scene, we see a ghost who appears to be a dentist locking Cyrus in a chair and performing extreme acts of torture. This appears to be a direct nod to an earlier scene in the film where the same dentist attempts to torture Gemma but is stopped by Cyrus. The latter suggests that her soul may be tortured after her body has served its purpose, and ironically, that fate seems to have now befallen him. But perhaps the most interesting detail in this scene is the brief cameo by KeyFace, who was reportedly last defeated during the events of ‘Insidious: The Last Key’. This effectively confirms that he’s still out there, still a threat, but nonetheless unlikely to make it to the other end of Murder.
