The man who once helped save the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is now ready to threaten it. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU, but he’s swapped Iron Man’s armor for the evil mask of Doctor Doom. Avengers: Doomsday. The film will be released in India in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu on December 17, 2026, a day before its US release.
Casting raised one big question. Who exactly is Doctor Doom? Trailers and posters have given us a glimpse of Marvel’s powerful supervillain, but his history in the comics goes back decades.
Doctor Doom, whose real name is Victor von Doom, first appeared in Marvel Comics. Fantastic Four #5. His story is closely linked to Reed Richards, also known as Mr Fantastic. The two were college classmates, intellectual rivals, and not friends.
In the comics, one of Doom’s experiments goes wrong and he blames Richards for the failure. An already competitive relationship turns bitter, setting the stage for the long-term rivalry that becomes central to Doom’s story.
How the Russo brothers will portray this complex relationship on screen remains a secret. But Pedro Pascal, who plays Reed Richards, provided a glimpse into that dynamic.
At Comic-Con earlier this year, Pascal discussed Reed’s attitude toward Doom, saying, “The intellectuals understand that we are all responsible for ourselves.”
“The world we’re in, and at least the way I understand it through the leads, is very unique to the relationship I have with Doom, and there seems to be a huge barrier between the context we all have as an audience for the Avengers experience and the incredible way it all connects together because the X-Men are sitting with us in this group,” he added.
Marvel’s comics give Doom a powerful arsenal. His abilities include magic, superhuman strength, and extraordinary intelligence, making him a threat that can challenge the heroes on multiple fronts. However, Brother Rousseau described his powers in detail. Avengers: Doomsday Secretly.
The casting is said to have been done by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. In an interview last year, Joe Russo revealed that Feige was the driving force behind bringing Downey Jr. back as Doctor Doom. The actor, in turn, convinced the Russo brothers to return to the franchise and helped direct it. Avengers: Doomsday.
Downey Jr.’s return marks a notable shift in the side, from the hero who ushered in the MCU’s defining era to one of its most powerful villains. Whether Doom’s arrival means the end of the Avengers as audiences know it or not is a question that will be answered when the film opens in December.
Avengers: Doomsday It will be released in Indian theaters on December 17, 2026 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The film will also be shown in Infinity Vision, a Premium Large Format (PLF) theater certification program, and other premium formats.
