Producing for the Planet (P4P), a non-profit organization that helps independent media creators reduce the environmental impact of their work, today announced the launch of its Animation Toolkit. The toolkit includes a guide titled “Drawn to Change: A Climate Guide for Animators and Studios” and a new carbon calculator designed specifically for animation production.

Most carbon calculators and guides for the entertainment industry are designed for live-action filming. Animated emissions look different. It primarily depends on render farm and compute time, studio energy usage, and travel and outsourcing by distributed teams. P4P has built an animation toolkit to give animators access to tools to estimate their footprint and embrace sustainability in their productions.

“As part of our commitment to the future of Canada’s children’s and youth media industry, we believe that advancing more sustainable practices is essential to building a resilient and thriving sector for the next generation,” said Agnes Augustin, President and CEO of Rocket Fund Canada. “We are proud to support this innovative initiative that provides Canadian animators with practical tools to integrate sustainability into their production processes and translate that commitment into meaningful action,” said Becki Brisson, Vice President, Business Affairs and Operations, representing Rocket Fund.

“BC’s animation studios and artists are global leaders in creativity and craft, and our sustainability tools must reflect these standards,” says Marnie Gee, BC Film Commissioner for Creative BC. “This toolkit provides creators with practical, animation-specific ways to reduce their footprint, and we’re proud to support this through the Reel Green™ initiative.”

Created with support from Rocket Fund Canada and Reel Green, the toolkit is free to use and open to any creator looking to reduce the environmental impact of their animation projects. Producers can access the toolkit at producerfortheplanet.com/animation-toolkit.

The Animation Toolkit is part of P4P’s broader efforts to make carbon emissions reduction practical and accessible to independent creators.

Producing for the Earth would like to thank Rocket Fund Canada, Creative BC, Reel Green, and the Province of British Columbia for their support.
