“Common Side Effects” Season 2 premieres January 24, 2027 at 11 PM ET/PT on Adult Swim. New episodes will be available to stream on HBO Max the next day. The news was announced Friday at New York Comic Con by series co-creators Joe Bennett and Steve Hely.
The animated thriller was released in February and quickly received rave reviews. The first season of “Common Side Effects” won a Peabody Award and four Annie Awards, and was also nominated for an Emmy Award and an Independent Spirit Award.
The series follows Marshall (voiced by Dave King), a fungus expert who discovers a mushroom that can cure all illnesses. Marshall wants to use his discoveries to help the world, but quickly finds himself in conflict with the DEA, the U.S. government, and large pharmaceutical organizations who will do whatever it takes to keep the Blue Angels out of the hands of the common man.
Season 2 follows the story of Marshall and Frances (voiced by Emily Pendergast), Marshall’s former lab partner turned accomplice. The two fugitives try to stay one step ahead of the many forces trying to stop them from sharing this panacea with the world.
In addition to King and Pendergast, “Common Side Effects” stars Martha Kelly, Joseph Lee Anderson and Mike Judge. Judge and Greg Daniels, known for their work on “King of the Hill,” also serve as executive producers on the series. Bennett was behind the 2024 Emmy Award-winning series “Scavengers Reign,” while Hely is known for her work on “Veep,” “30 Rock” and “The Office.”
“At Adult Swim, we always believe in talented creators who want to push animation into new territories, as well as a fan base that doesn’t hesitate to embrace and embrace new things,” network president Michael Ouweleen said in a statement. “The second season of ‘Common Side Effects’ continues to make new things possible not only for this series but for adult animation in general.”
“We are committed to asking big questions, capturing the absurdity of life, telling surprising stories, and advancing our long-term mission to heal humanity through mystical mushrooms whenever possible,” Bennett and Hely added. “So if you are one of the diseases of mankind, know this: your days are not numbered.”
“Common Side Effects” is an Adult Swim production from Bandera and Green Street Pictures.
