Dark Matter (Season 2) Episode 8, titled “The Basic Oneness of Everything,” feels like a warm hug on the coldest of nights. This gives us confidence that even when we are in the darkest tunnels, there is still a glimmer of hope and a way out. What I liked about this episode is that it makes you wonder who is treating whom. Laurel, Jason, and Amanda all carry their own guilt and feel like they could have done more when things fell apart. But perhaps they did their best to survive on what was left. Laurel, in particular, stands out as someone who has faced loss, grief, loneliness, and limitation, but still finds hope in the people she once swore would never enter her home. Through Blair, Layton and Charlie, we see how everyone deals with difficult times differently. This episode reminds us that suffering can narrow our view of the world, but healing begins when we open ourselves to possibilities we never thought we would consider.

Dark Matter (Season 2) Episode 8 ‘The Basic Oneness of All’ Recap:
Why did Jason decide to stay with Laurel?
The episode goes back two years. Jason and Amanda are still traveling to another world inside the box, and Amanda is badly injured by a tree branch. With Amanda’s life in danger, Jason reopens the box and enters Laurel’s house in a ruined version of Chicago. Amanda has a punctured lung, so Jason turns to Laurel for help, hoping he can do something to save her.
The next morning, after Amanda’s condition has been cured for the time being, Laurel decides she wants some answers. She’s already let two strangers into her home, and she needs to figure out who they are and why they’ve come into her life. Jason explains about the box and how it allows people to travel between different realities. He tells her about their situation and the strange journey they have been on. Laurel explains that she is actually a civilian nurse. Considering Amanda’s injuries and her medical background, it becomes easier to understand why Jason ended up in this special world.
What happened to Laurel’s world?
As the conversation continues, Jason learns more about the disaster that destroyed Chicago in this world. On May 20, a dirty bomb was dropped on the city, an event that occurred almost 20 years ago. The destruction changes the lives of those who survive, and Laurel must find a way to survive in a world where trusting others can be dangerous. Jason considers leaving with Amanda once she’s stable, but he has another reason to hesitate. He doesn’t want to end up like Jason2, who suffered a lot from his actions. Jason is worried about the choices he will make if he continues down the same path, so he decides to stay with Laurel for the time being. Meanwhile, Amanda needs several weeks to recover from her injuries.
Why does Laurel refuse to let strangers into her house?
As Amanda slowly gets better, Jason begins to settle into the house. He even asks Pat, one of Laurel’s friends, to help him get a new sofa and rug to replace the damaged ones. It seemed like a simple way to make Amanda’s surroundings more comfortable while she was recovering. However, Laurel has strict rules about allowing people into the house and becomes unhappy when she discovers what Jason did. For her, this isn’t just about having strangers in the house or changing furniture. There’s a painful reason why she needs to distance herself from people, and Jason crossed a line without understanding what that means for her.
Laurel eventually explains why she is so careful about letting other people into her life. Her best friend, Rory, was once reported to the authorities by a neighbor for possessing prohibited items. He was arrested and died in the camp while awaiting charges against him. This incident left Laurel with a deep distrust of those around her. She learned that even seemingly harmless people can put others in danger, and she never wants to take that risk again. Jason and Amanda believe that the outside world may have changed, but Laurel is not ready to believe that things have changed now. Her past has taught her to be careful, and she doesn’t want to forget what happened to Rory.
Who will be Laurel’s next visitor?

Eventually, Jason and Amanda decide to leave Laurel’s house and return to the box. But just because they leave doesn’t mean Laurel’s connection with the box ends there. Not long after they leave, another person comes in. This time it’s Layton. Laurel thinks he’s there to hunt Jason and Amanda and immediately grabs the shotgun. Considering everything she’s been through, she has every reason to be suspicious if someone suddenly shows up at her house. However, Leighton explains that he is a completely different version of someone you might know in another reality.
What does Layton suggest to Laurel?
Once Laurel understands that he isn’t trying to hurt her, the situation becomes less tense. The two ended up sitting together and playing cards. During their conversation, Leighton presents an idea that could change the way Laurel treats people who travel through boxes. He suggests that her home could be a kind of way station for travelers who need a place to stay for a while while traveling between different realities. Instead of treating every visitor as a threat, Laurel could offer them a place to rest before continuing their journey.
Laurel agrees to the idea and Blair becomes the next person to arrive at her house. At this point, Laurel began to become more comfortable with the unusual visitors who continued to appear in her life. She is no longer as closed off as she was when Jason and Amanda first arrived. She begins to go out of the house, gradually showing that she is becoming more and more willing to face the world beyond her home. Although her past still affects her, she seems ready to consider the possibility that not everyone who passes through the box is dangerous.
Dark Matter (Season 2) Episode 8 ‘The Basic Oneness of All’ Ending Description:
Why does Amanda choose to stay in Laurel’s world?

Amanda and Jason eventually return to Laurel’s house. Because this time it takes a day’s vacation to travel between universes. The constant movement through multiple realities has taken its toll, and they want a place where they can rest without immediately worrying about where they will go next. When Jason arrived, he noticed that things had changed since his last visit. Laurel is no longer the same person Amanda met when she was seriously injured, and her home has become a stopping point for other travelers.
Laurel reveals to them about the people who have visited her since she left. She explains how she gradually came to accept these travelers, and how their various choices in the hallways brought them to her. Their experience also leads to a discussion about how the box works. Laurel reinforces the theory that a person’s thoughts and emotions can affect the universe they enter. It’s not just the choices people make while traveling that matter. Their emotional state can also affect where they go, which makes the process much more complicated than Jason expected.
As time goes by, Amanda begins to think about what she wants to do next. She eventually decides to stay at Laurel’s house instead of continuing to travel with Jason. She’s spent so much time moving between different realities that staying in one place seems like a better option for her. Jason, on the other hand, is still determined to find his way back home. He wants to return to his world, even though the journey becomes increasingly difficult and he is not sure if he will succeed.
What happens when Charlie finds Jason at Laurel’s house?
When Christmas approaches and Leighton returns to Laurel’s house, things begin to change. His appearance brings the travelers back together, but Jason still contemplates the possibility that they may not find their way home. One night, while everyone is asleep, Jason returns home and talks to Amanda. He tells her that he only has two ampoules left and that he no longer believes he will be able to return to his original world. With little left to continue his journey, Jason must face the possibility that his journey may come to an end.
Instead of continuing to use his last resources in a desperate attempt to get home, Jason decides to stay. The more time he spends with Amanda, the closer the two become. A year passes and Charlie finally arrives at Laurel’s house. When the door opens, he is shocked to see Jason unable to find his way home. Charlie clearly didn’t expect to see him there and the reunion was a surprise for both of them. After spending time together, Charlie eventually returns to the box and continues his journey.
What does Jason mean when he says he wants to go home?
Seeing Charlie makes Jason reflect on everything he’s been through and how long he has to go before he can continue to find his way back. He’s spent too much time jumping between worlds to find the right one, but every attempt takes a toll on him and Amanda. With little choice left, Jason finally decides to stop running from one world to another.
The episode ends with Jason embracing Amanda and deciding that instead of continuing to look for a way out, it’s time to return to his original world and face everything that awaits him there.
