With the “Carrie” miniseries currently streaming and the just-released trailer for “The Exorcist: Martyr”, filmmaker Mike Flanagan has revealed another of his dream projects.
In an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit, Flanagan said he’s much more open to creating sequels to existing, larger franchises now than he was after making those two projects.
In fact, he said his two potential dream jobs would be covering franchises that began under Steven Spielberg’s leadership but have since fizzled out due to lackluster sequels.
“I spent a lot of time thinking I’d never do a franchise or a sequel and – oh no – but I really enjoy playing in a world that I know and respect and love, and I’m putting my own spin on it.
Honestly, I would love to make a JAWS movie. It’s another example of no one coming close to the original, but there’s a lot of room for improvement in the sequel. JURASSIC movies can be explosive too. I want to make it really scary. A true dinosaur horror movie would be really fun.”
Spielberg’s original “Jaws” remains one of the most groundbreaking films of all time. Three years later, French filmmaker Jeannot Szwarc (“Somewhere in Time,” “Supergirl”) helmed “Jaws 2,” which was nowhere near the league of the first film.
Over time (much like Peter Hyams’ “2010” or Richard Franklin’s “Psycho II”) it found its own fan base despite its flaws and is considered much better than the third and fourth films, which are often labeled the worst.
