Your western icon is…

Four icons and four completely different ways to get into trouble. This is the product you’ve probably been there for, why it’s right for you, and how much it costs.

Dollar Trilogy · 1964~1966

man without name

You never explained yourself and you never had to. Because people figure out pretty quickly that you’re the most competent person in the room without you even having to mention it.

  • Eastwood built the character out of everything he rejected, stripping away backstory, speech, and all conviction until only competence remained.
  • You stick to your own advice, and while others sometimes find that advice unsettling, you’ve never felt any real need to fix it for them.
  • Dollars movies work because he’s truly in it for himself until the moment he’s not, and it never explains that part either.
  • You will be gone before anyone has a chance to thank you.

Doc Holiday · Tombstone · 1993

Doc Holiday

You are the funniest person in most rooms and the most loyal person in every room. You would be truly insulted if anyone suggested that these two were in any tension.

  • Doc has no real reason to join this fight other than the fact that his friend is in it. This is the only reason he needs it.
  • You lead with tact, and do a very effective job of hiding how seriously you take the few people you actually care about.
  • Val Kilmer’s performance is one of the most quoted in the entire genre, as the jokes become increasingly edgier as the situation worsens.
  • You could spend everything you have on this and still describe it as a good week.

Wyatt Earp · Tombstone · 1993

Wyatt Earp

You never wanted this job, and you took it anyway. Because the alternative was to watch someone less careful do it badly. This is the most western reason there has ever been.

  • Earp is a reluctant authority figure, a man who came to town specifically to be left alone and ends up taking responsibility for everything.
  • You are instinctively protective, so if something goes wrong, your first thought is who is exposed rather than who is to blame.
  • These movies understand that maintaining order is much more costly than breaking it, and that those who keep the line are rarely appreciated.
  • You’ll do it all over again, and complain about it the whole time.

Matty Ross · True Grit · 1969 & 2010

Matty Ross

No one has ever successfully talked you out of something you’ve already decided is right, and many of us as adults have found that out the hard way.

  • Matty is the most persistent character in westerns, and he manages to do so through arguments, paperwork, and flat refusals rather than quick wins.
  • You have no patience for being managed, so you negotiate, confirm the details, and then show up exactly when you promised.
  • True Grit is that rare Western where the moral center is the youngest person on screen and all the adults around her have to keep up.
  • You’ll get what you want, and the movie is honest about what it takes away from you.
