The Young Animator of the Year UK (YAY UK) Awards have revealed the shortlist for the 2026 competition, providing a glimpse into the next generation of animation talent and a timely reminder that there is a place for young creators in the future of the industry.

Established in 2021 by ACCESS:VFX and Blue Zoo Animation Studio and supported by HUE and Wacom, the awards have supported emerging talent over the past five years and provided an important entry point for young people wishing to pursue a career in animation. The winner will receive a coveted trophy at the event, which kicks off a five-day celebration of animation at Manchester Animation Festival, while also gaining the opportunity to gain work experience and take part in studio tours. Some of the competition’s early winners have used this experience to advance their careers, while previous participants have secured roles in studios they first encountered through the programme.

The 2026 awards ceremony will attract 54 nominees and will be complemented by introductory industry talks as part of the Family Day celebrations. Speakers will include Aardman director and designer Gavin Strange, and a roundtable discussion featuring Tom Box, co-founder and managing director of Blue Zoo Animation Studio, and Michael Morgan, animation mentor and senior animator at Paramount Pictures, will explore the changing face of the animation industry and how creators can remain resilient as AI continues to reshape entry-level pathways. These conversations feel especially important when aspiring animators are questioning their future. Competitions like YAY UK provide more than just recognition. It provides visibility, connectivity and a reason for young people to continue creating.

2026 Young Animator of the Year Award

This year’s entries provide a glimpse into the technologies the next generation is developing and the creative voices that could shape the future of the industry. The finalists came from diverse backgrounds. 2D animation was the most popular category, with accessibility and ease of entry playing a key role in driving engagement. The YAY UK team also noted some clear and creative themes that emerged this year. The genuine love of nature and several surreal, dream-like sequences are perhaps a reflection of how animation provides a unique space for imagination and emotional storytelling.

YAY UK co-founder Tom Box said:

“This year’s entrants amazed us and with over 240 animated films submitted, 2026 is officially our biggest competition yet! We are very proud of our young animators who never fail to bring out the best in creativity and craft in every competition. We would like to hand over handmade trophies to the winners. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our sponsors, supporters, the YAY team and the fantastic industry judges who selected this year’s winners. Judging by the caliber of entries based, the future of animation is bright and outstanding. “It’s full of talent.”

As the animation industry navigates an uncertain future, YAY offers an opportunity to return to where it all began: the passion for creating on your own terms. The competition provides young creatives with the structure, encouragement and industry exposure they need to further develop their ideas and build sustainable careers in animation, keeping their ambitions alive and ensuring the industry continues to nurture new talent. The young animators participating in this year’s competition may be looking to the future, but the Young Animator of the Year award suggests that the future is bright.
